START A BUSINESS

One of the things I have discovered in teaching
success principles is the need for people to start
and run businesses; the need for
entrepreneuring.
It is very likely you will start your business in
your current line of interest. One of the places
where people are defeated is in starting where
they know nothing about, and this defeats one’s
confidence. It is usually difficult to make a mark
outside your area of assignments. It therefore
makes sense to start from your area of
competence and interest. If you are a journalist,
look closely around you, you will discover
problems you can package into business ideas; if
you are sportsman, there are many problems
awaiting your intervention. There is no career
that is inferior. Have you not noticed that people
have packaged humour into big time business! If
you are a tailor, strive to be the best tailor in
your area. If you are a mechanic, do all you can
to be the best in that area. If you try to add
value to the services you render to people, they
will always put you on their priority list. This is
guaranteed.
Looking at the existing services every day, there
are things you need that are not available. You
can just locate those things to start with. If you
are willing to provide better service than what is
currently available, it is likely you will find some
businesses to do. If you are talking about quality
service, this country has fantastic
opportunities. Just look at what is being
provided and decide to produce a better quality
one.
Until the new generation banks came into the
scene in Nigeria, the old generation banks were
holding us to ransom. The innovations brought
in by the new generation banks have made
banking transactions easy.
Universities in Nigeria do not prepare people to
start jobs; they prepare them to look for jobs.
Most times, the apprentice who studied under a
professional is better than a university graduate.
From the day he starts training, he knows that
he is going to own his business one day.
Something happens to the brain of the person
who has gone to the university, and he prepares
himself to look for a job. Education should not
be a disadvantage but an advantage so that we
will be able to manage opportunities better than
those who did not go to school.
If you are planning to ‘check out’ of Nigeria,
think well about it. When you get to your
destination, what will you do? Menial jobs? Are
you ready to do ‘dirty’ jobs? Many of the ‘dirty’
jobs that you will get to do there, you can do
them here. Learned people can do most
businesses in a better way. For instance,
vulcanizing can be done in a better way by
learned hands. Whatever the quality of service
you are willing to provide, somebody is willing to
pay for it even if it costs more.
Nigeria is in debt because it imports more than
it exports. In few years’ time, it should be
exporting more than it is importing, which will
depend on the entrepreneurs.
Become one of them today and your success is
guaranteed!
You will succeed!
